Silverchair Unite Catalog at Sony Music

Formed in 1992 by Newcastle schoolmates Daniel Johns (vocals, guitar), Ben Gillies (drums) and Chris Joannou (bass), Silverchair started young and had the type of career every kid dreams of.

The students got a leg up when they took out a national demo competition, then signed to Sony Music Entertainment Australia subsidiary Murmur, and swiftly set about making recorded music history.

Before they could legally drink or drive, the rockers were the hottest act in the country, ruling the national ARIA charts with their grunge-influenced 1995 debut album Frogstomp and the powerhouse single “Tomorrow.” Frogstomp went to No. 9 on the Billboard 200, and its followup, 1997’s Freak Show, peaked at No. 12.

All those years ago, recounts Denis Handlin, chairman & CEO, Australia & New Zealand, Sony Music Entertainment, who pulled the trigger on the deal, “three young boys from Newcastle burst on the scene with amazing music that captured the world. I am so delighted to have the band’s complete catalog with Sony Music. We are really looking forward to some exciting opportunities in the years ahead.”

Silverchair sold more than six million albums and achieved many firsts in their career. All five of their studio LPs, from Frogstomp through to Young Modern, went to No. 1 on the ARIA Albums Chart, a feat no other band count match. And by the time they disbanded, they’d collected more ARIA Awards than any other act, with 21.

In 2011, at the peak of their powers, Silverchair’s members announced they would go their separate ways.

In a statement announcing the new pact with Sony Music, Johns muses, “it’s great to have the catalog all under one roof,” and Gillies adds, “it just feels right.”

Joannou has the last word. “We’re pumped to have all the Silverchair albums with Sony Music Australia where everything started for us 25+ years ago,” he enthuses. “What a wild ride it’s been.”
