Sia’s been promoted to the title of grandmother! In a new interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe that aired on Tuesday (June 30), the singer revealed that one of her sons recently welcomed his own children.
“My youngest son just had two babies. I’m a f–king grandma!” Sia exclaimed. “I know, right? They call me ‘Nana.'”
Though she’s now a grandmother, the Grammy-nominated singer doesn’t want to be called that. Instead, she’s taking a page from pal Kris Jenner’s playbook. “I’m trying to get them to call me ‘Lovey,'” she said, referring to the name the reality star has her grandchildren call her.
The singer, who confirmed in May that she had adopted two 18-year-olds last year, also opened up about her “fantastic” sons and their history in foster care.
“I’m a little bit jaded now after investigating the foster system as much as I have done in the last year, because it’s completely corrupt; it’s failing us,” she told Lowe, explaining that both boys — who are Black — have been going through trauma programs. “They’ve been in 18 different locations in their 18 years.”
Sia explained that at first, things were a “massive rollercoaster” at home, with her sons — who are Black — telling her one thing, while she discovered another, and trying to keep them out of trouble with the law. “I’d say, ‘I’m doing this because I’m your mother. I love you,'” she shared about their emotional talks. “‘I don’t want to see you in prison. … With your history and the color of your skin, I don’t want to see you as that 5 percent that ends up in prison for life. I don’t want that for you.'”
The “Together” singer became emotional during the interview as she continued to talk about her two boys and racial injustice in the United States. “I’m embarrassed that it took me to adopt two Black sons to really understand what they go through on a daily basis,” she admitted, sharing that she’s “very scared” for her kids. “When this reality is happening, and it’s what we should be addressing more than anything else. … We can actually act, and we can actually try and get justice for Breonna Taylor, and Elijah McClain, just that there’s actually, we can have an effect. We don’t have to just feel sad and guilt.”
Though her son’s babies have brought joy during these troubling times, her boys and the progress they’ve made have also added happiness to her life. “One recently came out, and he’s just blossoming and is the light of my life. … I love him so much,” she told Lowe. “I’m just trying to do my best for them.”
